The project that started it all
Background
Year of 2007, historical site in the heart of Kyiv – a place between Mykhailivska Square and Maidan. They plan to build another luxury house, business center or hotel here. The invaded territory is embosomed with a huge green fence. Years pass, the land passes from one owner to another and the space behind the fence becomes a garbage dump. There is a hotbed of unsanitary conditions, a gathering for the homeless, and wild overgrown thickets.
If you want a change, should start with yourself
On February 18, 2014, guys, belonging to Samooborona Maidanu (Maidan Self–Defense all-Ukrainian civil movement), started removing the fence with the view to using it to strengthen the barricades. But the assault forced them to quit their jobs and join the ranks of the defenders again. Their work was continued by activists who dismantled the fence day and night. Two days later, solid green sheets were on almost every barricade and now they are on historical photos and videos from the Maidan.

The subsequent victory of the Revolution of dignity showed that if you want changes, you should start with yourself. First, residents of the yard initiated restoring order in the cluttered area. We created the Misto-sad group on Facebook, which brought together first hundreds and then thousands of Ukrainians.

Since March 1, 2014, various events have been actively held in the square and the media covered each new stage of creating the space.
The activists decided to call the place itself the Square of the Heavenly Hundred
Indifferent people gathered together: we removed tons of garbage, cut out self-seeding, leveled the site, brought land, planted plants, laid paths, created the First public vegetable garden, laid a lawn, built a unique playground created by Ukrainian artists.
All this was done by ordinary people with their own hands
Trees in the Square were gifted from all over Ukraine and planted by not indifferent residents of Kyiv, in particular family members of the heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. Now flowers grow in the square, art events and various cultural events are held and children's laughter is heard on the playground. It is the active actions of people, children's laughter and everything that is aimed at creating a new Ukraine that is dedicated to the heroes of the Heavenly Hundred.
Awards
In June 2016, the Heavenly Hundred Square received the “Special Mention 2016” award at the European Prize for Urban Public Space competition. For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the work of the Ukrainian team on creating a public space was awarded.
